Herringbone Gears

These gears were modeled to be used in the gearbox for an RC boat I started building in 2021. I chose herringbone gears because I had read they transfer power better than straight-tooth gears and self align due to their shape. I also made straight-tooth gears but I adapted them to have the angled teeth seen in the final design. The gearbox itself took 2 iterations, one with a 4:1 reduction and an older design with a 64:1 reduction. The more complicated gear arrangement was scrapped because it bogged down the motor. It also incorporated a 90° bevel gear system which added unneccessary friction. Unfortunately, because the old design did not work, I disposed of the printed frame and do not have photographs of it. The final parts were printed in regular PLA and so far have not failed due to heat or stress in the tests that I have done.
